IPM and Environmental MotivationMoney, Sex, and the Environment: What's My Motivation? |
|
What is motivation? It is, in short, why we do what we do. What motivates us? Well, a lot of things, our upbringing comes to bare on this, our sensibilities, our understanding of right and wrong, but look around you, you will see that the overwhelming majority of folks are motivated by something else entirely. In most cases it boils down to two things: Sex or Money. Since it is an almost undeniable fact, especially in those who are so motivated, that one will lead to the other, as crass and shallow as that may seem (we have all seen the lady of our current affections head out the door with the guy in the tailored suit and the over priced sports car) it is in fact a reality that we must live with. That is what we deal with, and admitting that is the first step to solving some of our problems. This is actually an ancient concept: "Feast is for laughter, wine maketh merry, but money answerereth all things" wrote Solomon in Ecclesiastes. Adam Smith explained it in detail in "The Wealth of Nations", and we see it every day. So, how do we solve problems? Motivate people. How do we motivate people? With money! Not pouring money on it, but allowing it to work in the way it has always worked best, private enterprise. Supply and demand. Throwing "government money" (read: our money), at anything, is a notoriously bad way to handle any problem, unless you see inefficiency as being a good thing. How does this work on the problems of our environment? If business sees that environmental concerns pay off, they will become "green". You may say, that they are doing it for the wrong reasons, but who cares? You still get the same result! We should quit trying to change the way people think about this issue, and start changing the way they act! We do that, by making it profitable to be ecologically friendly. They will realize the truth, once it becomes self evident. Let me give an example of how it works. Aluminium is recycled, almost completely. Why? Because it is cheaper to recycle it than to mine and process the bauxite ore. Simple economics. The only time it is mined is when fuel is cheap enough to make it feasible to drive from the mine to the plant, or when the price, brought on by demand, is high enough to make it profitable. If recycled paper was in high demand, you would see more paper recycling, the same with all other materials. Developing ways of making the process cheaper for manufacturers, and better for consumers would go a long way toward a "greener" planet! |
