A quest to prevent pests!

Pest Prevention: Not only is pest prevention the rational environmental solution, it is also the rational economic solution!

" A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money."  (Attributed to Everett Dirksen, who may not have said it, but it sounds like something he would have said!)

Every year Americans spend millions of dollars on pest control.
Every year we lose millions of dollars to pest damage.

We spend millions of dollars in chemical costs, millions of dollars in research and development, with some of the best minds in science, millions in pest control services, and now, due to the invasion of "non native, exotic species," millions more are being spent on controlling them.

The cost in terms of damage from insect and weed infestations is into the billions! That is "billion" with a "B."

We develop new chemicals, most of them very good, to deal with them.

We develop new equipment, most of it very good as well, to deal with them.

We employ thousands of people to deal with them, again, the best and brightest we have ever had, and again, at a cost of millions.

Now many people are concerned about the chemicals used in controlling pests, so a new market is thriving, a market in natural and organic pest control products has developed which once again, has some very good products, and once again, at a cost of millions.

Like the senator said, "A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon you're talking about real money!"

Do you see the problem here?

We are spending billions of dollars "controlling" pests, and very little on preventing pests!

Our focus needs to change! We need to begin to think in terms of preventing problems when we think about such things as:

*Where we build.
*What we build.
*How we build.
*How we maintain.

Fortunately, for the average person in a localized setting, this is one of the few areas in life over which we have any control.

You can make sure your home is well sealed inside and outside, around openings, that vents are screened, that the plants in your lawn and landscape are a reasonable distance from your walls and roof.

You can use good mowing, irrigation, and landscaping practices to lessen the chances of a bug and weed invasion. You can clear the edges of your property of brush and weeds that may hide, and feed insects and vermin.

There is a lot of good material on learning to prevent pests.  Read the material on this site, read it, learn from it, take action, and keep your environment, and your pocketbook from being ravaged by pests!
