Rational Solutions To Pest Control Problems Pest Prevention: Human Causes, Human Solutions. |
TexPest Services Pest Control From OK, I admit it, I am a hired killer! I kill for a living. Bugs and weeds are my primary targets. I am often called upon to deal with rodents and reptiles. Once in a while, a feral hog or two, but that is what I do. Being in the pest business, gives me a chance to see things from a different perspective. I see that most of what I do as a pest control operator would not be needed if people would give more thought to what they are doing. For example, if people would simply not mow the roadside right of way, filled with weeds and weedy grasses, before they mow their lawn, or at least, clean the mower well between the two, they would not need me to spray herbicides on their lawns to get rid of those weeds and weedy grasses in their lawns. If the low spots in the extended lawn were filled or drained, they wouldn't need me to spray for mosquitoes. Whatever the pest, there is a 99.9 percent chance that it is present because of a string of events initiated by a human being. Another example. "Mosquitoes are eating us alive on the pond when we fish in the evening!" When I check it out, I will almost invariably find a pond with a lot of algae, reeds, and various other forms of botanical life. This is not a bad thing per say, but an over abundance of anything can be a bad thing. What caused this to happen? In most cases, it is over fertility. This can be a result of a number of things, but in many cases, it is a result of over fertilizing a lawn, and then washing it into the pond by excessive irrigation! The over irrigation and the over fertilization results in an overly fertile pond, which accelerates the growth of the aquatic plants and algae. This makes a nice home for mosquitoes to build families! I can repeat this example in almost every case I deal with. I would like to encourage people to think through what they do, beforehand, and change the actions accordingly. We think about the whole thing backwards. We do what we want to do, without regard for the consequences, and then attempt to control the consequences. We should be controlling the actions that lead to the consequences! The best tool in the war against pests, is the human mind! Note: For a systematic approach to pest prevention see Bugs And Weeds Back To Pest Prevention Copyright (C) 2007 James Burns |
